This is a southern comfort food classic!
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 5 hours on low for best results
Total time: 5 hours 10 minutes
- 2-3 bundles of collard greens
- 2 large turnips
- 3-4 red chilies or crushed red pepper
- 5 strips of bacon or salt pork
- 1 tablespoon of salt
- 2 teaspoons of black pepper
- 5 cups of water
Pick greens from stems and wash thoroughly in a bowl. I like for them to sit in water soaking for a good 5 minutes. Then slice turnips and set aside.In a pot place salt pork or bacon, water, salt and pepper and crush red pepper. Add greens. Cover.
Once you have added the greens, allow 1 hour of cook time before adding the sliced turnips.
Cook covered on low for 4 hours (at least) Add water if needed but make sure not to drown the greens in water. At most add 1 cup of water at a time every hour. Once your greens are finished, and tender, eat and enjoy!
